GRIZZLIES MOVE INTO FIRST PLACE; DOWNING STRIKES OUT ELEVEN
SAUGET, IL – Grizzlie catcher Landon Hernandez had two of the Grizzlies three RBI in a 3-2 Gateway (17-4) win against the Frontier Greys (8-13) Wednesday afternoon at GCS Ballpark. Hernandez had a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first to score Jonathan Johnson and give Gateway a 1-0 lead. Johnson later scored the game winning run in the bottom of the eighth on a Hernandez RBI single to give the Grizzlies a 3-2 lead.
Both teams scored early and most of the game was spent tied 2-2. Gateway plated two in the bottom of the first. A Balbino Fuenmayor two run homer tied the game in the top of the second.
Pitching was the story for most of the afternoon. Gateway lefty Gregg Downing pitched seven innings, gave up two runs, five hits, two walks and struck out 11. The 11 strikeouts were a season best for Downing. He also had a season-best in walks. He allowed only two, and did not walk a batter until the the sixth inning.
Left-hander Eric Wooten started for the Greys. He went seven innings, gave up two runs, five hits, struck out seven and didn’t walk any. The win went to Gateway reliever Zac Treece (3-0). Richard Barrett recorded his seventh save of the year. Barrett now leads the Frontier League in saves.
